New Book by Clair Hartmann is Now Available!

Clair’s work can be seen around the globe and read in numerous publications which have featured her story and her artistic studies. With an extensive number of her pieces residing in private collections, institutions, and on the walls of numerous galleries, the love for her trade is apparent to all who view and own her creations. This book contains 29 paintings of the artist's favorite subject, the dog. These heartfelt paintings of our faithful friends were created from from 2009 to 2011. Clair works as a full time artist living on the Coast of North Carolina with her family and faithful muse/studio dog, Chumley.

A Window Between Worlds, the only national nonprofit dedicated to using art to end domestic violence, has been changing the lives of battered women and children since 1991. Through art programs and individual creative expression, survivors of domestic violence are given the opportunity to release their feelings, reclaim their sense of power and self-worth, and find hope for a brighter future.

Today AWBW reaches over 60,000 participants annually in 25 states. The art programs are offered to shelters, transitional homes and outreach centers at no cost. It is through the support of our caring community and friends that we are able to continue providing creative workshops to the growing number of women and children in crisis.

Thank you for being part of helping survivors heal the emotional wounds of domestic violence.

As hard as we all work to create original works of art to make a living..these people think it is just ok to steal it!!! This article will give you good insight on how they do it.

Who of us hasn't at one time or another seriously considered a career in forgery? How many times have you thought "My kid can paint better than that"? We all know that those abstract paintings could be knocked off in no time, and the people who buy them couldn't tell a Vermeer from an anal wart [There's the typical arrogance of a forger for you].

But if I can't sell my copies as high-priced forgeries and am instead forced to make endless cut-rate copies in a down Economy then hey, I'll take what I can get for the most part.

A suburb of Shenzhen in China, Dafen is an entire village of reproduction painters. Established by businessman Huang Jiang, it sprang up in the '90s and grew from about 300 to 8,000 artists producing massive quantities of paintings for the Chinese Domestic and Global Art markets. The villagers sidestep questions of copyright by (mostly) copying paintings that are older than 50 years, and by not masquerading them as authentic works.

Of course, the term 'sweatshop' is heavily loaded. Images of foreign slave labor, children toiling on industrial looms and the Triangle Shirtwaist fire spring instantly to mind. Does it apply in the case of the Dafen painting studios? Painters do "work long hours for very low pay", but the focus of the World Media regarding Dafen has been the public's insatiable appetite for cheap knock-offs, not the working conditions of the painters themselves.

According to Der Spiegel, 29 year old Dafen artist Wu Han Wu "receives the equivalent of €0.30 per copied painting. That means he earns between €100 ($128) and €300 ($385) a month -- barely enough to cover his living expenses and send a little money home. But he doesn't complain: "It's much better in a workshop like this one, without a schedule."

Indeed, the article goes on to say that "the life Wu and his roommates live is not so different from that of the artists whose works they're copying, at least as far as their average day is concerned: They start painting around lunchtime and work until late at night."

Explore The North

Explore The North was fantastic! I enjoyed the festival tremendously! I decorated the show last friday. You can see an impression of the show in the video clip above. This video was shot by Reinout Meijer of the Leeuwarder Courant and is the last one in this series of 5 episodes. You can watch all 5 movies here.

The next day I had breakfast with a lot of musicians, writers and prominent figures from all over Northern Europe. I heard poems from Iceland, Sweden and Wales to name a few. All in their own native language with a translation afterwards. Our host was Jan Douwe Kroeske, well known for his radio and tv shows called 2 Meter Sessies.

Jan Douwe Kroeske called me to the stage for an interview and to hand over my painting Frisian Printing Press to the Leeuwarder Courant. This newspaper purchased my painting of which a part of the proceeds go to Youth Theatre School 'n Meeuw. Lieuwe Krol of this school was very pleased with this to say the least, as of course was I!

Afterwards I spoke to Jan Douwe Kroeske and the mayor of my hometown. We had a nice little chat about arts and culture in general. Jan Douwe said something I don't soon forget:'Never forget that an artist has power of their audience. It's up to you to show the way or even to lead.' That's a quote well worth remembering.

During the day I saw a lot of good musicians and writers. I especially enjoyed Jan Douwe Kroeske's 2 Meter Sessie in the same church where I showed my paintings.

He talked about his program and showed video clips of his sessions with some of the greatest musicians from the past. But the thing I liked most was his live guest Teitur. A musician from the Faroe Islands with an angelic voice. Just perfect.

In a time where I like to think that everything has gone commercial Explore the North proved me wrong. This festival wasn't about making money, this festival was about arts, music and literature with a heart and soul in it.

It was just great to see that so many people turned up to enjoy the real thing. I would like to thank everybody who made this festival possible and I can't wait for next years edition!

The Betty Murray Award, the highest award given by the Weatherford Art Guild, is equivalent to the Most Valuable Player award given in sports. The Weatherford Art Guild (Weatherford, Tx) hosts an active art guild numbering over a hundred members. Vonnie Kohn held the office of Vice-President of Shows for 4 years, sharing this responsibility with Mr. Paul Latham, President during the years of 2006-2010.

In her tenure, she created a number of new art shows including the Annual Miniature Holiday Gala, The Western Art Show, coinciding with the historic Ft. Worth Stock Show, and the Fall Photography Show, involving the Ft. Worth-Dallas area. In addition, she oversaw the Annual Peach Festival Art Show which hosted more than 200 artists from the Metroplex. This Festival draws a crowd in excess of 35,000 in one day.

The Weatherford Art Guild honored Ms. Kohn, stating that as a member she exhibited a notably dedicated service to the art group and best represented the art group to the community. This award is usually given to only one member annually, but Ms. Kohn & Mr. Latham shared their responsibilities with equal distinction over the four year period. The awards were presented on Monday, October 23, 2011 at the monthly meeting.

September 8th, 2011 was the official opening of the Weatherford Art Exhibition at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford, Texas. Two featured artists, Michael Bain, who specializes in troumpe l'oil ("fool the eye") technique, and Pamela Stern, a clay ceramist, along with the Weatherford Art Group were included in the show. The museum show was also featured on Channel 11 in Ft. Worth, a tv news station prior to the opening night. The art exhibit will continue through the entire month of September, 2011. This painting was one I did with Virtual Paintout. A place somewhere on earth is given each month and using Google Maps, we find a place and paint! This one comes from the area of Fairbanks, AK,
a beautiful wooded country road with a few small flowers in bloom along the roadside.

Just wanted to let you know of an exciting show I will be in from September 17 to November 5. The opening reception is Saturday, September 17, from 6:00 to 10:00. I have six paintings in this show. All are painted within the theme of show, "California's Amazing Bounty". I have depicted orange groves, vineyards and still life paintings combining the two. No dessert paintings this time. ;-)

Spanish themed Paintings @ Beto's Restaurant

In Texas, we have a wonderful cuisine known as Tex-Mex. Near us is a place known as Beto's Restaurant. The owner, Beto Garza, is also the chef, while his wife is hostess. We came to know Beto when he was a chef at another local restaurant in our town. His excellent cooking left its mark on our community. When he began his own place of Tex-Mex, we found ourselves as faithful customers once again.

As we became better acquainted, his blank walls became a "canvas" for my paintings to hang. Here is one of them, as I presented a 24 x 48" gallery wrapped canvas for one of their main walls. It is one of five main Spanish Missions located on the "Mission Trail" in San Antonio, Tx.

Since then, I've had the opportunity to hang 2 smaller paintings. There is another works-in-progress, entitled, "Esperamuza" , 24 x 36", gallery wrapped, which will be added to the collection soon. I will post an image of this in the coming weeks.

A Moroccan Journey

Travelling is one of my biggest pleasures in life as it widens experience and brings fresh new sources of inspiration for my paintings. I love going to places that have a lot of variety, colour and contrast . Observing the different cultures and looking at the world from a different perspective and being out of the normal routines of daily life. As well as allowing for flexilbility and unexpected changes of plan. I even enjoy all that is part of setting off to a new destination the preparation , packing and that feeling of eager anticipation at the airport.

A recent mother daughter trip to Morocco brought a wealth of inspiration and was full of sensory delights with rich earth colours , decorated tiles,elegant architecture and bustling street life. We traveled over
1800km (1200 miles ) and passed through a landscape that varied from the Atlantic coast,olive and lemon groves forests, ancient walled cities such as Fes to the dry heat of the Sahara desert.

Being surrounded by so much warmth, colour and new sensory experiences did much to lift my soul and reignite my creativity which has lessened over the last few months due to pressures of my elderly mother's illness. There were inspirational delights everywhere from the beautifully presented plates of food , street markets with bowls of fruit and spices piled up into pyramids , women wearing brightly colored veils and kaftans , intricate metalwork on doors and decorated tiled fountains. I sketched , kept a journal of all the myriad of impressions, wrote haiku type poems and took numerous photographs to try to capture all that was of interest. These notes and visual material provides a resource of ideas that will begin to form the basis of ideas that shall percolate into my work.

Everywhere I go I see circles that inspire my circular themed paintings and Morocco had an abundance of this Universal symbol .There were circles in the buildings, pavements , pottery , fountains, windows and in particular the decorative tiled table tops which combined clear balanced design with jewel like colours.

Energized with my creativity flowing again I am now looking forward to see what emerges from all this Moroccan inspiration in the months to come...The echo of the red of Marrakech buildings; a curve of an arch, the pattern of a mosaic, the juxtaposition of old and new the expanse of the desert will be soon be interpreted and abstracted into new paintings

Art Exhibition at The Women’s City Club of Pasadena

The Women’s City Club of Pasadena at the historic Blinn House is pleased to announce its fall art exhibition, “A Touch of Gold.” The exhibition, which runs from August 1 through October 31, 2011, features fifty six paintings by eighteen California-based artists. It will be the second exhibition produced by Margaret Danielak, the Women’s City Club of Pasadena’s Curator of Exhibitions. The artists’ reception is Thursday, August 11 from 6 pm to 9 pm.

“I am thrilled to be able to showcase the work of such talented artists from throughout the state. The venue—the beautiful and historic Blinn House—continues to inspire me. I look forward to sharing these fall themed paintings with the community,” says Danielak.

The “Touch of Gold” exhibition features the work of artists Scottie Brown, Barbara Davidson, Lee Edwards, Julie Hill, Olga Kaczmar, Anna Kelly, Athena Mantle, Beverly Lazor, Robin Neudorfer, Ferial Nassirzadeh, Kate Moriarty, Terry Romero Paul, Julie Snyder, Carol Steinberg, Diana Stewart, Beth Summers, Trice Tolle and John Paul Thornton.

The Blinn House was built in 1905 for lumber baron Edmund Blinn and his family. The Blinns hired popular Chicago architect, George Washington Maher to design their California home in the Midwestern Prairie School Style. The building has been home to the Women’s City Club since 1945 and continues to serve the Pasadena community as a meeting place for civic, cultural, and educational activities.

“A Touch of Gold” will be on view from August 1 through October 31, 2011. The reception is Thursday, August 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The Women’s City Club of Pasadena is located at 160 N. Oakland Avenue in Pasadena, CA 91101. Free parking is accessible behind the building from Madison Avenue. It has been a long time since I've written! Time flies... when you are busy! It has been a very busy spring and beginning to summer here in Wheaton. I'm sure that's not unusual, but it seems like time has just evaporated!

Just a quick update on life as I know it ~ the spring semester finished in early June. I brought home quite a bit of work this summer because of some changes to some of my classes and also a whole new class that I've never taught before (fashion design).

That should be interesting!

I also took a 2 week grad class immediately after the semester was over, and have another one starting next week. And, of course, there are family things going on. I'm taking some time to slow down and rest, as well as trying to paint daily. All in all, its a very busy summer time! But, its wonderful to be in the midst of summer!

Wet Paint! ~ My July Feature, Just off the Easel!

This painting was done in an entirely new way (for me). I used the street view of Google maps and participated in a "virtual paintout". This location is from the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel along the east coast - along La Route de Sainte-Catherine.

For years many have passed this house and marveled at the floral display at 3725 No. Vassault St. in Tacoma . Last year there was no display and we had wondered if the Asian man who owns this house was ill. This year the display was back in force and we stopped this past Sunday to photograph it. We went up to the owner and told him how much we had enjoyed his garden all these years and he invited us to tour his creation. We found the backyard to be as beautiful as the front. He is Vietnamese, shy, very soft spoken, and speaks very little English, so we couldn't discuss too much with him about the garden.

As you can see a lot of the flowers are in pots.

I guess this is so they can be changed easily.

The front of the house is not neglected,either.

I wonder if he takes the pots in at night to keep them

from being stolen.

Here is the master gardener! I wish we could have communicated.

I will print up some of these photos and give them to him.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I find myself painting many subjects in Nature from waterscapes to landscapes. My work originates from an affinity for the outdoors which, allow me to capture the essence of my subject with intensity.
My work is a compilation of large & small scale oil paintings depicting images of Wetlands, Cloudscapes, Seascapes, Rural Landscapes and Dragonfly's. With the intent to capture beautiful moments that are spiritual, powerful and emotionally charged.

With that being said, working outdoors has led me to exploring the Dragonfly - artistically and through Folklore. In my most recent work, these stylized paintings are indirect reflections that things are not what they seem. They represent moving past self-created illusions that limit growth. With the use of color and light I wanted to capture their chaotic movement into very simple poetic motifs that whisper the winds of change.

The materials I use are Old Holland and Windsor Newton Oils on stretched canvas or Masonite board.

Bio

Dianna Poindexter is a Realistic painter who creates large-scale, colorful works that include subjects of Nature & Landscapes. Many of her paintings depict Wetlands, Rural scenes, Beachscapes, Water, and Cloudscapes. Her paintings capture beautiful images of the outdoors that embody a soothing ambience.

Poindexter's work has been shown in Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania & can be found in several private collections. She received the Outstanding Community Service Award in the Lehigh Valley for art work donated to the Children's Center at Crime Victims Council & received a scholarship from Art Forms Gallery in Manyunk, PA. Poindexter is originally from Arizona and moved to Philadelphia, PA., to attend Moore College of Art & Design, where she graduated cum laude & received a BFA in Painting & Sculpture. She now works and resides in Bethlehem, PA.

My Modeling Career ... Ha!

I haven't posted in awhile, but I have been painting, and I'll get caught up on the posting soon. (Blogger was really squirrely for a few days last week, so I gave up wasting time on that.)

But in the interim I was called on for Monday and Tuesday of this week to model for a painter's workshop. Qiang Huang (pronounced Chong Wong) put together a workshop with his friend Zhaoming Wu as the instructor. Modelling was a new experience for me since I'd never done that before. But I do have an amusing story to share with all of you.
On the first day I met Qiang for the first time and he then introduced me to Mr Wu and of course we shook hands. But as he released his grip I held on to his hand and asked "Is this the hand you paint with?"
"Yes" he replied.
I then clasped his hand with both of mine and said "Let me see if I can get some of your magic."
We both had a chuckle over that and then as I released his hand Qiang said to him "Kirk is an artist too."
Then Mr Wu said "Well in that case...." as he extended his hand for me to shake again. And we had another hearty handshake and a laugh over that.
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'm left handed.

Mary Hughes

Bio: A native of Wichita Kansas, oil painter Mary Hughes became serious about pursuing art under the tutelage of watercolor artist Charles Sanderson. Though not formally trained beyond her brush with Sanderson, the past few decades she has gathered inspiration and hours of self-study in Chicago, Michigan and the coast of Maine. Her face paintings of companion birds was highlighted in Good Bird Magazine. Her work falls into several categories: birds, dog portraits, realistic still life and most recently lake and ocean scenes claim her attention. Her paintings can be found in private collections in the U.S., Japan, The Netherlands, France, England and Israel.

Artist Statement: My best work comes through me not from me. Letting go and allowing the painting to flow is the greatest feeling and the best outcome.

I am a great fan of virtual art community wetcanvas.com. I find it a wonderful place to celebrate art in all it's shapes and sizes.

Their are several forums dedicated to genre and medium and there is a lot of learning material on the site, invaluable for me as I am a self-taught artist.

It will come as no surprise that I mainly participate in the floral and botanicals forum. Each month there is a challenge which can vary from flower type, style,colour etc. This month's challenge was to paint Magnolias. The host chose several suitable photos, but artists can paint from their own references if they prefer. It's a great way to stretch yourself with subjects you might not think of painting. It is also interesting to see how different artists tackle the same subject. My contribution was this painting

Journée des Chevalets on the Riviera

On Sunday 22nd May I will be participating in 'Journée des Chevalets' - A day of the easels - along the Promenade des Flots Bleus in St Laurent du Var, here on the riviera. This is where several local artists, from all over the Côte d'Azur get together to display their art to the public en plein aire. During the summer months there are several 'Journée des Chevalets' and 'Artistes dans la Rue' (Artists in the street) days located in the various small villages around here. The old villages provide a superb backdrop for the art and as a non-participant in the past, I have always enjoyed going to 'have a look'.

This is the first time that I will be participating in a group event like this. Please come along and have a look if you are in the area.

North Carolina Artist

It happened early in life. I knew I was a creative. Though the outlet for my creativity took many different forms, in the end, the chosen path was painting. I paint for the sheer joy of it. I use pastels, acrylics and primarily oils. My subject matter will vary from still life to figuratives to landscape. I enjoy color and a less than realist style. I want the work to have loose and flowing strokes. My palette knife is sometimes used to achieve that goal.

I did not pursue art as my major career though I did take numerous classes while at Elon University and at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. It is instead a part of my life that sits on the sidelines and waits for me to have precious time to give to it. I hope one day that might change, but until then, I make the most of the time I have to devote to painting. When I have time to give, I give it my all! I have made the time to study with some very giving professionals such as Karin Jurick and Peggy Kroll Roberts. Their influence has been instrumental in the development of my style.

I find artwork to be a continual learning process that is always joyful. If a painting of mine is admired or sold, it is just icing on the cake!

Artists of Colorado Opening by Pam Holnback

Last night was the Opening of the Artists of Colorado Inaugural Juried Show held at Brushstrokes Gallery in Denver. It was a great event. The weather was beautiful, which helped bring people to the First Friday Gallery Walk for the four galleries in this neighborhood. It was great to see artists that I've met before, but who live in different parts of Colorado, as well as to meet in person artists with whom I've been blogging but never met. Here I am with Joanne Hanson, Jane Hunt, and Saundra Lane Galloway.

Here I am with Jessica Forrestal, Kit Hevron Mahoney, Anita Mosher, John Harrell, and Tracy Wall. Kit, Anita and John are the owners of Brushstrokes Studio/Gallery.

Last night was the opening of the Art Show at Sunny Vista Living Center. Each year the show draws more and more artists, which is great as 25% of the sales benefit the residents. I was pleased that three of my recent pieces were juried in to the show.
